On this 14-day small group journey, this land of dramatic contrasts invites visitors to encounter its ancient ruins and sacred mosques, endless desert and storied mountains, imposing kasbahs and spirited souks. Begin the journey in the Moroccan capital, seaside Rabat, where highlights include the Roman site of Chellah, the contemporary art museum and lunch in a private home.
Visits to two of the itinerary’s five featured UNESCO sites follow: the imperial city of Meknes and the impressive Roman ruins at Volubilis. During a three-night stay in Fez, Morocco’s oldest imperial city, exploration reveals the fascinating medina’s many treasures, along with dinner in a family-run riad. After crossing the Middle Atlas mountains, reach Erfoud and enjoy a tour highlight: a sunset camel ride along the breathtaking sand dunes on the Sahara’s edge. Experience spectacular scenery en route to Ouarzazate in the snow-topped High Atlas, including dramatic Todra Gorge; and journey along the ancient “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs.”
En route to Marrakech, visit Ait ben-Haddou village, a UNESCO site made famous through films. Touring in fabled Marrakech includes the beautiful Koutoubia Mosque, the cobalt blue-accented Majorelle Gardens, the Yves St. Laurent Museum and a walking tour of the medina ending at Djemaa el Fna Square, Marrakech’s heart. Spend a final day in storied Casablanca, Morocco’s largest and most sophisticated city, and visit the magnificent Hassan II Mosque. Discover two of Morocco’s most alluring destinations on an optional 4-day/4-night post tour extension to Tangier, the “Gateway to Africa,” and the blue city of Chefchaouen.
I knew Morocco would be an interesting country given its location and history, but I wasn't prepared for the wide range of experiences. There is an unexpected variety within the landscape from the High Atlas Mountains to the Anti Atlas Mountains to the broad and sweeping Sahara (of which only 20% is actually dunes!).
The incredible history and thoughtful embrace of past cultures and their influences on the country and people adds to Morocco's uniqueness. While the style of buildings change from area to area, there is a comforting similarity that leaves no doubt as to where you are.
I also wasn't prepared for the enjoyment of all of my senses. From tile work that is just part of the landscape for the locals but can be almost overwhelming in its beauty and never-ending styles to the rich aroma of spices that offers some of the best food imaginable. The beautiful light illuminates the landscape and makes it hard to take a bad photo.
Odysseys Unlimited has long-standing personal and professional partnerships with the Moroccan locals who guide you through the Souks and teach you about the unexpected high-quality wines available and are a reflection the French influence that remains. I will go back to Morocco in a heartbeat and think anyone interested in history, geography, food and culture should explore this amazing county.
